Origins of the Frontier and American Western Myth

The American frontier and the Old West have been indelible elements of American culture, history, and even politics. But how did the concept of “The Western” emerge and why has it endured? This presentation will take the audience on a journey to answer those questions, and to learn how the Western still impacts American society — all accompanied by images of America’s past and present.

Speaker(s):
Nadesan Permaul · Adjunct Faculty, Political Science and Rhetoric · Nadesan Permaul received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. at Berkeley in political science. He retired as an administrator at Berkeley after a 34-year-career. Permaul has taught in political science, rhetoric, and sociology over the course of 25 years with a focus on American culture, history, and politics. He is a past president of the Cal Alumni Association, having served from 2003–05.
